Sacraments

Anointing of the Sick

“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1499)

“The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be danger of death from the sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.”(Catechism of the Catholic Church 1514)

Anointing of the sick is celebrated in a variety of ways at Saint Gabriel: if you are ill and in need of the Sacrament of Anointing, Please call the parish office.

Baptism

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other Sacraments.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1213)

Infant Baptism

Baptism is the first of the three sacraments of initiation. Preparation for the baptism of infants can begin during pregnancy. Preparation classes are given as needed. We ask that parents to attend two preparation sessions, which focus on the theology of baptism & the signs and the symbols of the sacrament. Infant baptisms are usually scheduled on every 1st Sunday of the month at the 11 o’clock mass.

For children 7 or older desiring to be baptized, please contact the Parish Office during business hours (Mon-Fri, 8:00am-4:00pm).

Contact the parish office at 202-726-9092.

Confirmation

The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace… “By the sacrament of Confirmation [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1285)

The sacrament of Confirmation is the third of the three sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church. Students preparing for this sacrament receive it in the spring of 8th grade, following two years of preparation.

Eucharist/Reconciliation

Eucharist is the second of our three sacraments of initiation. It is essential that your child have a sense of God and church community when they are preparing for the sacrament. The usual age for First Reconciliation & First Eucharist is seven years old (second grade) or older. Required Documents:

Marriage

“The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1601)
